  • Primary Schools (Key Stage 2)
  • Secondary Schools (Key Stage 3)

What level of skill or ability is required?

There is not a specific skill level or ability to participate in The Cycle Coach school sessions.

The sessions focus on grass-roots cycling activities and follow a progressive syllabus. Riders will be given the opportunity to learn the basic bike-handling, core cycling and group riding techniques in a fun environment. All programmes are inclusive and open to anyone who can ride a bicycle unassisted.

your commitment

your commitment

To effectively host The Cycle Coach we request that schools meet the following requirements:

  • Provide a traffic-free space, such as a playground, school playing field or car park.
  • Children who enrol are committed to the entire 6-week programme which consists of 6 x 1hr sessions.

The Cycle Coach programmes are written to understand how each rider develops physically and how they develop skill. This knowledge helps us develop and deliver appropriate sessions to meet their needs.

Young riders have a number of different motives for taking part in The Cycle Coach sessions. We try to find out what these are so we can plan and deliver the appropriate sessions in order to promote health (physical, psychological and social) and help riders set realistic goals.

The Cycle Coach’s qualified British Cycling coaches are on offer to provide information and guidance to both staff and children on the pathways and options available to explore cycling further.

Beyond the sessions, we’d be keen to help you instil cycling as an accessible sport within the school environment. From training staff to coach activities through to inter-school competition and young volunteer programmes: there are many opportunities to open up.
